As you might have seen, when checking my message wall over the past weeks, we are planning a merger with Tomica Hero Wiki. Already a year ago a member of the Tomica Hero Wiki contacted me and also the bureaucrat from Ryukendo Wiki, but there has been silence since then. But now the merger is most likely going to happen over the next days and months. As it is not the first merger between wikis, which I've experienced, as I helped with a merger between Transformers and Transformers Prime Wiki five years ago, I'm aware that merging wikis is a serious endeavour and so requires discussion with community input and concensus, something which I value anyway on any community under my leadership. And so I started this thread to address every aspect of the upcoming merger, such as content, which should be transferred to this wiki, or even which powers admins from Tomica Hero Wiki should get. Feel free to add your thoughts.

It's been a year since I last went on this wiki and edited pages, so I want to show you a photo that I took a few minutes ago
TakaraTomy official site has started a countdown toward the official reveal of Jobraver. The countdown would end at noon on March 31th (Japanese time).
If they make a comeback movie, Rin Kumaneko would be a pink Granner named Granner M. And Her Earth 🌎 Tomica, Core Granner Pegasus 🦄, and her Gao Granners Pegasus 🦄, Zebra 🦓 & Falcon, form together to become Earth 🌏 Granner Pegasus 🦄 Zebra 🦓.
Because a question I always see popping up is “where can I buy Tomica”, I made a small guide. This is from the perspective of someone who lives in the US, but many of these vendors still ship elsewhere. (And if you’re in Asia, you can probably just buy them in your local stores and save on shipping.)
Hobby Link Japan
HLJ is typically my go-to place. The number one reason is the fact that they’re the only non-proxy way to stand a chance at grabbing a pre-order of the special colors at normal price, and occasionally they’ll even have some after release if some people cancel pre-orders.
The other thing that makes HLJ great is its Private Warehouse gimmick. What this means is, after ordering an item, you aren’t forced to immediately ship it. So if you ordered something they had in stock and then make a pre-order, and then another pre-order, you can ship all those together once all items are in. It’s a great way to save money with how expensive shipping is now.
HLJ also has some of the best prices, with most items selling for less than retail price.
One downside is that they only will stock Tomica which can be purchased in normal stores. So no Takara Tomy Mall or AEON or Toys R Us and the like. Additionally, while they offer pre-orders for the main line (including Long and Dream), Premium, Gift Sets and TLV, anything else is a gamble. If your looking for Tomica World, Disney Tomica, robots such as Earth Granner, etc., they sometimes get a limited quantity in after they’re released, but in some cases you’re out of luck, and would be better off pre-ordering elsewhere
The second downside is that they will sometimes take more pre-orders than they actually get. And they won’t bother to notify you about it. I’ve ended up out of luck for pre-ordering an item and finding it “discontinued” when I checked the product page.
Amazon Japan
Usually my second choice, due to having some neat things going for it that HLJ lacks.
The first of these is the pre-order guarantee. Because the price of the items tend to fluctuate, you’re guaranteed the lowest price the pre-order hits, even if it goes back up again after. Though the base prices are a little higher than HLJ, sometimes you still end up paying less this way.
The other is the fact that Amazon allows 3rd party sellers. This means you can find all sorts of Tomica, ranging from store exclusives to long-since-retired products. Unfortunately, you will run into some 3rd party sellers who won’t ship overseas. And thus, you’ll have to use a proxy, which may not make the added cost worth it. Plus, people are free to jack up the prices on 3rd party items as much as they want, so you might want to check around with auction sites to see if the price you’re paying is anywhere near the current going price. But I’ve definitely found some good deals on niche or older items this way.
Of course, unlike HLJ, your items ship as soon as they release. Even if you pre-order multiple items with different release dates in the same order, they’ll be shipped to you as they’re released. You also can’t combine pre-orders, so make sure to pre-order as much as you can in the same order, or pay shipping twice. (Side note: when you pre-order things together with different release dates, the shipping cost is split between items, and not always equally, for the record. ie: If shipping is $30 they might charge $5 for the first shipment and $25 for the second. Not sure of the logic.)
One new downside is that Amazon Japan used to ship exclusively DHL, but now they've been using a new shipping service, not letting you choose on pre-orders, and I've heard that the new service is quite slow despite being just as pricey. DHL usually comes in 2 business days.
AmiAmi
The thing about this site that disappoints me is aside from TLV and trading figure sets, you can’t pre-order Tomica items. They only get them in at limited quantities (including items that HLJ and Amazon has at much more abundant quantities) after release. So if you’re worried about getting a pre-order in for a certain item, they’re as good as useless.
What I do appreciate is that they actually stock some of the trading figure set (such as the Sign Sets which are regular Tomica, not lower quality). HLJ tends to not stock them, and Amazon usually blocks foreign pre-orders due to the fact that they come with candy (a tiny piece of gum, in truth). They also sometimes have good clearance sales, and I’ve seen Tomica there (including TLV) for quite low prices when they’re included in these sales. So it’s worth browsing to see if they have any steals.
With combining orders, you can only combine multiple separate pre-orders if they release in the same month. I think you can add in-stock items to a pre-order, to be shipped together with them, but not 100% on that.
Mercari Japan/Yahoo Japan Auctions
I’m linking these two together despite them being two completely different sites, because the same points apply to both. Mercari is a sale site entirely made up from 3rd party sellers. Yahoo Japan is the same, but also has auctions aside from items which can be immediately purchased. Both of these sites require proxies to ship out of Japan, which requires paying additional fees to the proxy service who will purchase them for you.
Despite the proxy annoyance, both are goldmines for finding almost any Tomica you could want, and sometimes at bargain prices. You could spend hours browsing both, given that anyone can list anything, and new listings are constantly turning up.
One catch is that because the items are secondhand, you have to pay good attention to the quality listing. Each item will list this (and you honestly have a decent chance at getting a brand-new, unopened item, depending on what it is), and there will often be a picture if you want to get a closer look. Be warned that some sellers will only use stock product photos (especially on Yahoo Japan), so in those cases you’ll have to rely on the description. But I will say that from the few things I’ve purchased there, they’ve all been new or like-new. I got one with the box a bit damaged, but the Tomica was perfectly fine, and I’m willing to bet the box was damaged in shipping (it was packed in an envelope with no padding.)
Unfortunately, some Mercari shippers won’t accept some proxies, so you’ll likely have to do some proxy shopping to find your best bet. I tend to use Buyee, which often has good coupons, but I also get a lot of strikeouts with them on Mercari.
Mandarake
Mandarake is a second-hand store with actual locations in Japan. So the items they sell typically come from one of their storefronts. Like with Mercari/Yahoo, items come and go, and it depends what people are selling them. There’s also the risk of an item on the site being sold to someone at the store faster than you can get your order through.
The great thing about them is that you can often find very good prices on rare/older items. The other great thing is that there’s a good chance it will be in really great condition. I once purchased a Next Stage Drive Head from them which was deeply discounted because the box had been opened. However, the item itself had clearly never been touched. It was still in its plastic ties, the sticker labels untouched. I wasn’t expecting that, but you bet I was thrilled.
The catch is that their shipping tends to be quite high, even compared to other sites. And you have to wait to get a quote on the shipping until after you order the item.
eBay
To be honest, eBay is like a last resort to me, but it is indeed a popular place to buy and sell Tomica. While I know there are some dedicated, reputable sellers there, it feels like for each one of them, there’s 5 more who are just trying to rip you off. I would suggest looking carefully to see how much a Tomica is going elsewhere before placing an order and finding you’ve overpayed considerably. I’ve also seen items listed on eBay that are clearly pieces of junk, with chipped paint all over. It makes me wonder who would buy that, even if it is a rare Tomica.
HobbySearch
I’ve never used them. But I know they’re a reputable seller who will stock most Tomica items that can be purchased in regular stores and ship overseas. Worth a look.
Walmart
That’s right. You can (sometimes) find Tomica in your physical Walmart store. In some regions, Fred Meyers and Kroger carries them as well.
Since 2019, a small selection of mainline Tomica (standard colors, no. 1 -120) have been sold in the US, Canada and Australia. They come in blister packages, but are packaged with the original box. This is apparently an anti-theft measure, so people can’t just stuff the box in their pockets.
Unfortunately, some Walmarts don’t stock them at all, and others will always just have the same 2-3 models, which is quite annoying. But it’s certainly worth a look if you have one nearby. Several of the US-released models are also retired in Japan, so you’re likely to get them for a cheaper price than the JP release on Amazon or w/e.
Purchasing vendor-limited Tomica
Say you want to buy from the Takara Tomy Mall, or from AEON style, or from a bus company, or a sport’s team’s site when they’re doing a collab. Unless you can luck out finding it on Amazon Japan, you’re going to need a proxy.
I’ll admit I don’t know a lot about proxies, as I mostly use Buyee which has a very limited range of platforms. But if you Google around, there are many others that will buy from any site you want, and even some who will go to physical locations and pick up the item for you. You’ll want to compare your options, as different proxies will charge different fees, or offer different benefits such as free combined shipping of multiple orders. But obtaining almost any Tomica is feasible even if you don’t live in Japan this way.
Feel free to add any others if you know them.
