Tomica Special DVDs are a series of Tomica-related DVDs, which began releasing in 2006.
Description
In November, 2006, Tomica began to release a series called Tomica Wakuwaku DVD (トミカわくわくDVD; Tomica Exciting DVD). These DVDs came with serialized episodes featuring a number of Tomica original characters. The first DVDs featured a character called Toppi-kun, who comes from Tomica Kingdom. He received a Magic License from the king, which allows him to ride Tomica. Toppi-kun becomes a member of Hyper Rescue, which is featured in several DVDs, along with Hyper Blue Police and Plarail's Hyper Guardian organization.
The second protagonist introduced is Tatton-kun, who is a student of Toppi-kun and also possesses a magic license. He is involved with both Hyper Rescue and the Hyper Blue Police.
In 2008, the Tomica Waiwai DVD (トミカわいわいDVD; Tomica Yay DVD) debuted, which was essentially the same, despite the change in name. It featured a hero named Kouji-kun, who is also involved with the Hyper Blue Police. Additionally, it introduces the Tomica Boys (Yuuki-kun, Tetsuo-kun, and Gouta-kun, who ride Tomica summoned by Tomica Cards), who starred in their own mini series. They are eventually joined by the Tomica Girls (Reiko and Mai). The Hero Chapter features Tomikaizer. Later releases have included stories centered around Tomica's mascot, T-kun.
In both the Wakuwaku series and Waiwai series, aside from the shorts, the DVDs usually included games, music videos featuring original "Tomica Songs", virtual picture books of different Tomica, various commercials, and occasionally other bonuses such as virtual tours of the Tomica Expo, or information about real cars. Some DVDs were based solely on the virtual picture book concept, and did not include stories.
Some DVDs came packaged with exclusive Tomica, or other items such as Plakids or playmats. These were sold in special edition releases, which cost more than the standard versions.
